Architecture faculty's installation opens Sept. 2
Molly Hunker, who teaches second-year studio in Woodbury University's School of Architecture, and her colleague Greg Corso will debut their multi-colored canopy installation on Thursday, September 2 in West Hollywood. The canopy, made of 100,000 zip ties and 3,000 feet of electrical wire, has been installed in the Revolve clothing boutique. The "Life Will Kill You" installation opening reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the boutique, located at 8452 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood.

Check out animation alum's film on Sept. 12
"Pseudo Stupidity: A Love Story" by Michael Mendoza will be screened as part of the Burbank International Film Festival.  Mendoza was a Woodbury animation major who graduated this year. His film will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 12 at the AMC6 in Burbank. Click here for time and ticket information.

Alumni Night at Dodger Stadium is Sept. 3
Woodbury University alumni and friends can catch the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the rival San Francisco Giants during an alumni outing on Friday, September 3. The game starts at 7:10 p.m. and the special Woodbury tickets include unlimited concessions (Dodger dogs!) and fireworks after the game. Cost is $31 per person. For more information, click here.

Fashion sustainability expert to speak Sept. 15
Fashion sustainability expert Lynda Grose of the California College of Art will be on the Woodbury campus on Wednesday, September 15 to share ideas with fashion design students in textile classes. Identified in 2008 as one of London’s Financial Times ‘green power brokers’, Grose sees sustainability as the core of innovation and is passionate about design bringing form to a sustainable society.

'Crude: The Real Price of Oil' to screen Sept. 15
The Burbank Green Alliance's Environmental Film Series will present "Crude: The Real Price of Oil" from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 in the Ahmanson Main Space on the Woodbury University campus. Check-in starts at 6:30 p.m.

Hispanic graduation rate brings U.S. recognition
Woodbury University tops a list released by the Education Trust of private institutions that succeed in graduating Latino students at rates similar to those for white students. The Education Trust singled out Woodbury as a school where Latino students are thriving, noting that 31 percent of Woodbury students are Hispanic and that the graduation rate for this population is 62 percent—well above the 47% rate for Latino students nationally.

'History Detectives' to feature Woodbury professor
An episode of the show "History Detectives" that was shot at Woodbury will air at 9 p.m. Monday, August 30 on PBS.  The show tracks women animators, including including Woodbury professor Dori Littell-Herrick, who worked on the last cartoon to use animation cels.

Welcome, new and returning Woodbury students!
Woodbury University will begin welcoming new and returning students on Friday, August 20 for the 2010-2011 academic year. Welcome Week activities include parent and family orientation, a welcome dinner, a day-long trip with stops at Venice Beach and historic downtown Los Angeles, a barbecue, Dodgers game, intramurals, job fair, pool party, and more. Faculty member envisions a futuristic Milan
Herwig Baumgartner and School of Architecture adjunct faculty member Scott Uriu (BplusU) will debut their installation "Limited Edition" on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at the Architecture and Design (A+D) Museum in Los Angeles. The installation, featuring a live digital fabrication process for a model of a futuristic city proposal for Milan, Italy, is part of the exhibition “Come In” at museum.

'Burbank to Bursa' explores summer trip

'Moebius' to appear at animation expo
Legendary author, designer, and comic artist Jean Giraud "Moebius' will take part in the second annual Creative Talent Network (CTN) animation expo, which is being co-sponsored by Woodbury University. In addition to "An Evening with Moebius" the November 19-21 expo at the Burbank Marriott Convention Center includes sessions with award winning New Yorker cover illustrator Carter Goodrich, lead animator from "Nocturna" Pablo Navarro, "Despicable Me" screenplay writer and master animator Sergio Pablos, "Alvin and the Chipmunks" animation director Chris Bailey, "Megamind" lead character designer Chen-Yi Chang, the director of "Princess and the Frog" John Musker, and many more along with acclaimed animation studios recruiting and presenting from Spain, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and the US.

San Diego M.ArchRED alum, faculty earn AIA awards
Woodbury alumnus Mike Burnett has been recognized by AIA San Diego with the Young Architect of the Year Award. In addition to Burnett, who was in the first Woodbury University M.ArchRED (Master of Architecture in Real Estate Development) graduating class in 2006, M.ArchRED co-chair Jonathan Segal won an honor award and M.ArchRED faculty member Lloyd Russell won a merit award in the competition. Woodbury professors offer guided tour of LA
Woodbury faculty members recently took participants at the New Directions in the Humanities conference on a guided tour of Los Angeles, alighting upon significant sites of landscape architecture, literature, and interior spaces. Faculty members Emily Bills, Elisabeth Sandberg, and Randy Stauffer conducted the hour-long workshop, “Beyond Banham: Touring Los Angeles’s Alternative Ecologies," as part of ”8th International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities at UCLA.

Architecture prof's work named one of 40 best
Sara Daleiden, adjunct faculty in Woodbury University's School of Architecture, has had her work selected as one of the 40 best public art works in the United States and Canada. Chosen from more than 300 entries, the organization Americans for the Arts singled out the 40 for reflecting the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2009.

Junior Fellows address global economic crisis
The financial problems triggered by the home mortgage crisis that began in 2007 are still with us. Eleven Woodbury students who were chosen as The Junior Fellows in Transdisciplinarity recently collaborated with Dr. Douglas Cremer, dean of the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies, in a special seminar to address issues related to the global economic crisis . Each student also received a $1,000 tuition grant.

Fashion marketing grad launches Etsy U
Check out Woodbury graduate Erica Macaranas' article  A Student's Guide to Jet-Setting in Style on Etsy, the leading Web marketplace for handmade goods. She used her experiences on a Woodbury trip to Paris, Florence, and Rome as the basis for her Etsy U travel-made-easy recommendations. Macaranas is the founder and  leader of Etsy U, an Etsy team for college students that allows its members to network, interact, and promote their shops while supporting each others' creative and academic interests. 

Students take honors in national contest
Woodbury University School of Architecture students, along with their counterparts and collaborators at the University of Buenos Aires, have earned national honors in the ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition.

Woodbury earns re-accreditation from WASC
The Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges & Universities has reaffirmed Woodbury University's accreditation for a period of nine years.  Since the new accrediting procedures were implemented, only three universities have been granted a longer period.  "I am proud of your work which made our achievement possible.  Thanks to the Woodbury family, and congratulations," says Kenneth R. Nielsen, Ed.D., president, Woodbury. "As was noted in the Capacity and Preparatory Review, Woodbury University is not standing still.  It is moving forward rapidly.  I look forward to our continued work together."

Architecture students earn first place prizes
Congratulations to Woodbury University School of Architecture students who recently earned first place honors in two competitions! Cody Glen, with professor Gerard Smulevich, won first place in the 2x8 AIA Student Exhibit and Scholarship for his project “Re.Cover,” a water filtration and recovery building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jeremy Ng and David Isagulyan, with professors Gerard Smulevich and Rachel Allen, won the Julius Shulman Rising Star Scholarship Award at the LA Business Council for their third-year studio project “Wave Strength: A Spa for PTSD Research and Recovery.”

Alumni, friends to enjoy Bugs Bunny at the Bowl
Join the Woodbury University alumni community at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday, July 16 for Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. This brand new edition of Looney Tunes and live orchestra adds classics like "Tweet and Lovely" and "A Scent of The Matterhorn," plus special guests Tom and Jerry in The Hollywood Bowl and The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Scooby-Doo. Don’t miss these, plus old favorites like "What's Opera, Doc?" and "The Rabbit of Seville" in this world premiere anniversary concert of Warner Bros. cartoons on the big screen with the scores played live! There will be fireworks after the event.

Graphic design students partner with non-profits
Woodbury graphic design students Mark Bello and Aarin Stewart were honored this week by the Burbank City Council for their work to develop a new logo identity and website for the Burbank Arts Council. In addition, Woodbury graphic design student Tatiana Camacho-Daniel's logo and promotional materials have been chosen as the winning entries in a SAG Foundation project. 

Woodbury gets CIC/Walmart College Success Award
Woodbury University has received a $50,000 grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and Walmart Foundation to improve graduation rates for first-generation students by developing a new program that connects coursework with career goals. This new approach to career development will help students in Woodbury’s School of Business through a combination of classroom learning and practical experience. By emphasizing the skills sets necessary to succeed professionally, Woodbury aims to help students focus on how their studies will lead them to their eventual careers. 

Graphic design student earns national award
Congratulations to Woodbury graphic design student Sose Ohanjanian! She was named as merit award winner in the 2010 Washington DC, American Institute of Graphic Arts Show Off Competition. Ohanjanian won for her package design concept for a line of Japanese tea.  Stop by the Woody's showcase on the Woodbury campus and see her winning work from June 7 through October 16.

Students explore Paris, Florence, Rome
Twelve Woodbury students and two professors just returned from an 11-day trip to Paris, Florence, and Rome as part of two courses sponsored by the School of Business and the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies. They visited several art museums, toured famous historical sites and looked into business practices on the Continent.

Still not sure what you'll be doing this fall? Check out Woodbury's "Last Call for Fall" from Monday, June 21 to Friday, June 25. The Admissions Office will be holding their "Last Call for Fall" event each day from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. to give students the chance to apply last minute for the Fall 2010 semester, which begins August 23. There will be opportunities to meet with an admissions counselor, tour our beautiful campus, submit documents needed to complete a current application, sign up for orientation, win prizes, and more. 

Woodbury to host June 24 small business event
Aspiring and current small business owners are invited to attend a free and open-to-the-public business workshop and expo, entitled "Grow Your Small Business: Financing, Contracts and Negotiation Workshop."The session will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 24 at Woodbury University's School of Business in the Fletcher Jones Auditorium.

Architecture students take part in 2x8 exhibit
Woodbury University's School of Architecture will be represented at the 2010 2x8 Student Exhibit & Scholarship presentation, taking place at the LA Convention Center on the Dwell on Design Exhibit Floor, June 25-27. A student team from the School of Architecture will appear in the show as well as in the forthcoming book from AIA. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. The free reception is open to the public.

Animation professor offers 'History Detectives' clues
Dori Littell-Herrick, chair of Woodbury University's Animation Department in the School of Media, Culture & Design, will be interviewed this week by the PBS show "History Detectives." Littell-Herrick, who worked on the last cartoon to use animation cels, will show how the cels are used, explaining the process of moving from the drawing on paper, to the tracing of the outlines on the front of the cel, and the filling in of the color on the back.

Students studying this summer in Tahiti, Turkey
Woodbury students aren't taking the summer off from learning. One group of architecture students is in Tahiti and another group of architecture, fashion design and politics and history majors is in Turkey studying art, history, and culture.

Woodbury awards three honorary degrees
More than 5,000 people were on the Woodbury University campus May 7-8 to celebrate commencement. In addition to honoring this year's graduates, honorary degrees were awarded to William R. Lucas, Class of 1952, retired senior partner, Lucas, Horsfall, Murphy & Pindroh LLP; Fran Inman, senior vice president for corporate development, Majestic Realty Co.; and Walter W. Mosher, Ph.D., co-founder of Precision Dynamics Corporation.

Graphic design student helps U.S. troops
Between her graphic design studies at Woodbury and a part-time job, Jessica Maddin has a full life. But the Pasadena resident has found time to launch Jessica's Hope Project to send care packages and hand-written letters to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and South Africa. Wells Fargo's Marla Vasquez joins Woodbury's board
Marla Vasquez, senior vice president and regional president for Wells Fargo’s San Fernando Valley Community Bank, has joined the Woodbury University Board of Trustees.  A 16-year veteran of the company, she oversees 986 team members and 41 banking stores across the San Fernando Valley with nearly $6 billion in deposits. “We are delighted that Marla Vasquez has joined our Board of Trustees,” says Kenneth R. Nielsen, Ed.D., president, Woodbury University. “She brings not only tremendous finance, sales, and business experience, but also a commitment to the communities of the San Fernando Valley.”

Interior architecture prof earns prestigious Rome Prize
Congratulations to Joshua G. Stein, associate professor of interior architecture! Stein is a winner of the prestigious Rome Prize in architecture.  His project, "Cast Gallery: Inhabiting Ornament," was accepted as one of the winning proposals for the 2010-2011 residency in Rome.

CEO Baron Business Plan winners announced
Congratulations to the CEO Baron Business Plan winners! Sponsored by Woodbury alumnus Thomas Baron,  the competition is organized annually by the Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization (CEO) of Woodbury University and offers $5000 in prizes to the top three plans. A total of 15 plans, written by individual students and teams, were submitted for the contest, including ventures in mass transit, artificial arms and legs, retail sports, a healing sound studio, furniture design, and educational centers.

Woodbury University architecture students and architecture professors Dr. Paulette Singley and Jeanine Centuori will present present their “Guerilla Actions” from this spring’s “Guerilla Urbanism” studio on Friday, April 30 at a Farmlab public salon. The free program begins at noon.

'The Intern Queen' to visit campus April 20
Lauren Berger, known as "The Intern Queen," will speak from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21 in the Hensel Hall Conference Room at Woodbury University, Hear how Berger, who has been featured in BusinessWeek and on CBS, FOX, and NBC, landed 15 internships during her four years of college.

Join us April 17 to learn about 'Rainwater Harvesting'
The Arid Lands Institute @ Woodbury will offer the free workshop "Smart Systems: Rainwater Harvesting + Grey Water" on Saturday, April 17. Despite heavy rains this year, water for irrigation, washing, and bathing is scarce and more expensive. Jenna Didier of Fountainhead Design will lead participants in assessing their water needs and resources on their property, arriving at the best water reuse strategies. Leigh Jerrard of California Greywater Corps will lead a hands-on workshop tapping into laundry machine drainage and legally reusing that water.

Graduate Speaker Series to feature Porto's CEO
Woodbury University's Graduate Program Speaker Series continues on Tuesday, April 6 with Raul Porto, president and owner of Porto’s Bakery. Hear how Porto took his mother's home-based, cake-selling business and built it into one of the largest and most successful retail bakeries in the country, serving over two million customers per year, and employing more than 400 people. A reception begins at 5:45 p.m., with the program from 6-7 p.m. in the Malburg Atrium in the School of Business.  

Graphic design student nabs top AIGA award
Woodbury graphic design student Mark Bello received top honors for his cultural poster design in the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) EMERGE student exhibition at the Pacific Design Center. See Bello's work through Friday, April 2.

Fellows Program applications due March 31
The Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies is seeking students and faculty who want to challenge themselves through the Fellows Program. The Fellows Program brings together students and faculty, scholars and practitioners, and activists and artists from across the disciplines in order to enrich the educational experiences of our students and ourselves. The application deadline is March 31.

'2D3D: Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control' opens
"2D3D:Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control," a comprehensive annual exhibition of architectural drawings, will open Thursday, March 25 at the Woodbury Hollywood Gallery (WUHO). A reception will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m., and the exhibition runs through April 23.

'Business of Entertainment' set for March 27-28
Von Johnson & Associates, Inc. (VJA) and Woodbury University will co-sponsor a weekend lecture series on "The Business of Entertainment" on March 27 and 28.  The free series will take place in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium on Woodbury’s campus. Senior executives from major studios, professional organizations, and suppliers will discuss issues affecting independent content financing, distribution, and marketing; 3D motion picture production; content production for Internet distribution; and piracy issues.

'Amalgama' exhibition opens in Cabrini Gallery
The Cabrini Gallery at Woodbury University presents “Amalgama,”  a group exhibition organized by John O’Brien, through April 23. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. 

'Guerilla Urbanism' to hit the San Fernando Valley
Woodbury University is launching  “Guerilla Urbanism,” a special research studio focusing on the San Fernando Valley. Developed with the idea of furthering last year’s research on the Valley with student installations of a guerilla art nature (all legal), Woodbury is affiliating with Buster Simpson, a prominent public artist, who will be working with the students on a 10-day proposal for reclaiming water at a Whole Foods store. In addition, Woodbury students will host a public salon at the Los Angeles public art organization Farmlab's facility next to the cornfields in the downtown area.

This two-hour seminar will cover the application process, costs, and the schedule for upcoming semesters. Current students from our MOL program also will highlight what they have learned while studying at Woodbury, and you will have the opportunity to ask admissions counselors and current students questions. 

Students exhibit work at Pacific Design Center
As part of the Pacific Design Center's West Week festivities, 10 pieces of work by Woodbury University graphic design students are appearing in EMERGE, the American Institute of Graphic Arts Student Design Exhibition.  A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 25. The exhibit runs through through April 2.

Woodbury grad wins Oscar Designer Challenge
Did you see the Oscars? Then you saw the award-winning work of Woodbury alumna Rania Salibi. The  2008 fashion design graduate topped eight other finalists to win the Oscar Designer Challenge 2010. Her gown made of laser cut leather earned the most votes during an online competition.

Fashion Design Dept. kicks off spring events
Woodbury's Fashion Design Department is kicking off a full slate of spring events with the March 10 reception for the opening of the “Under the Sun: Swimwear in California” exhibition and concluding with the May 2 scholarship gala and fashion show "ASiATiKOS" at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

'Celebrating Music with the Guitar' set for March 5
The Woodbury University Cultural Arts Council invites you to experience a festival of guitar and voice through a diverse group of songs, performers and musical styles. Woodbury professors and students will perform, and special guest composer and guitarist Gisle Krogseth will present recently composed songs from his latest work.

Centuori's work seen at Tempe History Museum
Architecture professor Jeanine Centuori's “Looking through the Past,” a public art commission, was recently installed on the grounds of the Tempe History Museum.  The project from Centuori's UrbanRock Design ,  serves as a “teaser” along Southern Road as well as a draw into the museum.  A set of six metal plates with imagery of the museum’s collection come in and out of clarity and focus depending on the position of the viewer.  Centuori describes them as "fugitive images are ghosts of the past mingling with the environment."

Interior architecture earns national Top 10 ranking
Woodbury University's interior architecture program has been named one of the best in the United States. Woodbury was recognized in a national Top 10 undergraduate list for 2010 by the publication DesignIntelligence.

'Water & the West' symposium set for Feb. 26-27
National, regional, and local presenters will tackle the subject of water and the West during a February 26-27 symposium at Woodbury University. The free symposium seeks to blend science and civic engagement to solve critical issues.

Architecture faculty's work featured in exhibition
The work of four Woodbury faculty members is featured in the "The Page" exhibition in Orange County.  Chris Puzio, a member of Woodbury's San Diego architecture faculty, and School of Architecture undergraduate chair Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, working with architecture graduate assistant chair Andrea Dietz, have designed chairs for this exhibition.  The exhibition and reading area table was designed by adjunct faculty member Linda Chung (with Daniel Herman).  The exhibition runs through March 12 at the Chapman University Guggenheim Gallery.

Feb. 21 memorial to honor Julius Shulman
Woodbury University's School of Architecture and the MAK Center are co-hosting a memorial honoring Julius Shulman from 5:30-8:30 on Sunday, February 21 at the Schindler House. "The Enduring Contribution of Julius Shulman" includes a cocktail/hors d'oeuvres hour and speakers who will share their memories and impressions of Shulman, a long-time friend of Woodbury.

'Unsustainable Creatures II' exhibit opens Feb. 12
"Unsustainable Creatures II," a solo show of sculptures by Cynthia Minet, will be at Woodbury University during the last  two weeks of February. The trapezoid-shaped project space will house the  installation of several animals made from recycled and repurposed clear and colored plastic containers and objects. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 12. The show closes on February 26.

Special effects masters series comes to Woodbury
Looking for something new to do on Tuesday nights?  Come to Woodbury University to check out a new, free film series in which Hollywood's special effects masters will show clips from their films, explain the process, and take questions from the audience.  The films will be shown from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fletcher Jones Auditorium.

Burbank Green Alliance to screen 'Garbage' on Feb. 3
The Burbank Green Alliance (BGA) will screen "Garbage - The Revolution Starts At Home," the first film in its environmental film series series, on Wednesday, February 3 in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium at Woodbury University. Learn how the family household has become, according to the BGA, "one of the most ferocious environmental predators of our time" and how people can make a difference in their own homes. Julius Shulman documentary gets critic's nod
A documentary about the late photographer Julius Shulman, who was a friend of Woodbury University, has been singled out as one of the year's best by a Los Angeles Daily News writer. Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman was cited by writer Bob Strauss in his Top 10 list. Shulman's legacy lives on in many ways, including the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University.

'Meet the Design Firms' event rescheduled for April 20

'Project Runway' to feature Woodbury alumna
Woodbury fashion design alumna Christiane King is part of the cast of "Project  Runway" Season 7, which is scheduled to premiere Thursday, January 14 on the Lifetime Network. King and the other designers from ' Project Runway ' Season 7 are in this week's "Us Weekly" magazine on newsstands now. One of King's dresses, worn by actress Katerina Graham from hit TV series "The Vampires Dairies"  is also featured on the the cover of "Stepping out."

Ed Spiegel is School of Business Alumnus of the Year
Business and community leader C. Edward Spiegel will be honored by his alma mater with the Woodbury University School of Business Alumnus of the Year Award. The award recognizes an extraordinary individual who has set a high standard in their chosen profession, and will be presented to Spiegel during a February 11 luncheon at the California Club in Los Angeles.

Free summer workshop offers intro to graphic design
Interested in graphic design? High school students have an opportunity this summer to participate in a free Introduction to Graphic Design workshop at Woodbury University. This intensive 10-week (3 unit) course will familiarize students with the fundamentals needed to begin to create their own artwork and projects. This is a perfect introductory course both for students planning on pursuing a degree in design as well as anyone inspired to learn how to design on the computer. Students learn though a combination of lectures, hands-on training, and by doing real-life design projects!

Professor earns award for 'Architecture School' series
Woodbury University architecture professor Stan Bertheaud's "Architecture School" is being recognized by the International Documentary Association. The six-part series that aired on the Sundance Channel followed a group of students at Tulane's School of Architecture. The film, which Bertheaud created along with Michael Selditch, won the International Documentary Association's top prize in the Limited Series category.

Professor to explore urbanism at Dec. 12 event
Woodbury University architecture professor and chair Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter has been invited to participate in the Saturday, December 12 symposium Intensive Fields: New Parametric Techniques for Urbanism that brings together leading experts from the world of digital technologies, cultural theory and urban design.

'On These Shoulders We Stand' to be screened Nov. 24
Producer Glenne McElhinney will bring her documentary, "On These Shoulders We Stand," to Woodbury University on Tuesday, November 24. The film about the significance of Los Angeles in LGBT history by paying tribute to the elders of the community will be shown from 12:15 to 2:15 p.m. in the Fletcher Jones auditorium. The free screening will be followed by a Q & A with McElhinney.

Farmlab salon to feature architecture professor
Woodbury architecture professor Dr. Paulette Singley will be featured at the Friday, Nov. 20 Farmlab Public Salon. Dr. Singley will present new research that develops the comparison she drew between Francis Bacon’s painting and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s architecture—in her essay “Hard to Swallow: Mortified Geometry and Abject Form (Eating Architecture, 2004)—into a probative speculation regarding the role of figure and field in the architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and contemporary digital production of space. 

Student's film to air Nov. 16-20 on Nickelodeon
Ultra Super Sudden Death, a short film by Woodbury animation student Carlos Barata, is a finalist in the Nickelodeon Animation Festival 2009.  Barata's film will air on Nickelodeon at 1 p.m. (PST) starting Monday, November 16 though Friday, November 20.

'Green' landscaper to to speak Nov. 17
“Green” entrepreneur and landscaper Dan Mabe will present "Cleaning the Air One Electric Mower at a Time" at noon on Tuesday, November 17 at noon in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium on the Woodbury University campu. A demonstration will follow in the Faculty Center Quad. The program is part of the Sustainability Speaker Series and presented by the Sustainable Campus Task Force.

CANSTRUCTION LA benefits the needy
Check out CANSTRUCTION LA, an event where architects, designers, builders, and engineers have created structures using cans of food, between now and November 15. Woodbury University is a sponsor of the design/build contest that benefits those in need. All cans used in the exhibit will be donated to the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank, and those viewing the display are asked to bring additional cans of food as "admission."

Woodbury receives $3.4 million in federal grants
Woodbury University will receive $2.8 million from the U.S. Department of Education over the next five years to expand its Master of Architecture program and increase student opportunities including those for Hispanic students to succeed at the graduate level. In addition, a $600,000 grant from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the Arid Lands Institute at Woodbury University will educate students and stakeholders about the complexities of problems surrounding water in the West and seek solutions to this challenge in low-income communities.

Graphic design student earns national honors
Woodbury graphic design student Kris Helmick is a winner in the AIGA Flux Student Design Competition.  He won in three categories, including identity, packaging, and web-interactive.

Woodbury earns grant from Turkish Cultural Foundation
Woodbury University has received a $10,000 grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation to co-sponsor a study tour to Turkey, May 10-28, 2010. This award will be used to off-set student expenses. The on-site field experience in Turkey is the second component of a new spring course "Cordoba to Istanbul and Beyond: Art, Architecture and Apparel" being taught by Meredith Strauss and Rochelle Kessler.

Professor gives her take on Lindsay Lohan
Woodbury alumna and adjunct fashion marketing faculty member Wendy Bendoni was quoted widely over the weekend throughout the international press as the fashion world analyzed the launch of Lindsay Lohan as the artistic advisor for Ungaro. Bendoni is fashion director of the fashion forecasting website Stylens.com  

'Iron Giant' 10th anniversary moved from Woodbury
ASIFA-Hollywood will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 1999 animated masterpiece “The Iron Giant”, with an evening with lively discussion with some of the animators and crew members on Friday, October 23. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Please note that the location of the program has been moved from Woodbury to the Steven Ross theater on the Warner Bros. lot.

'Howard Greer: Designing Hollywood' opens Oct. 14
Pioneering fashion designer and film costumer Howard Greer's work will be on display in the Tamkin Fashion Gallery at Woodbury University beginning Wednesday, October 14. “Howard Greer: Designing Hollywood” will open with a reception and lecture by Shelly Foote, a costume historian who was formerly with the Smithsonian Institution. The display honoring Greer, who became an advisor to Woodbury University and was instrumental in the development of the university's costume design program, will run through January 13, 2010.

Join us for 'A Celebration of Julius Shulman'
Woodbury University will honor famed photographer Julius Shulman, a long-time friend of the university, on Sunday, October 11. "A Celebration of Julius Shulman" will be highlighted by a showing of the movie "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman." The film and the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University are the subject of an article in this week in the New York Times. "Visual Acoustics" filmmaker Eric Bricker will be presented with the 2009 Julius Shulman Communication Award.

Students to take Oct. 11-12 cotton farm tour
A one-day tour of the San Joaquin Valley will challenge perceptions of what agriculture is, and what it could become. Woodbury University's Department of Fashion Design will sponsor an October 11-12 cotton farm tour that has helped to educate dozens of companies that switched to organic or California-grown cotton.

Architecture student earns notice for 'urban cool'
Woodbury architecture student Emily Cheng's thesis project, Urban Cool Island, has earned an award from the American Institute of Architect's (AIA) Pasadena and Foothill chapter. Cheng took on the urban phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island Effect and used micro-scale strategies that retrofit existing conventional industrial buildings and macro-scale strategies that utilize gravity fed natural water treatment systems to create an Urban Cool Island that serves as a prototype for existing and future industrial zones and instills community pride while fostering a quality of life for industrial workers.

Federal grant to support MArch programs
Congratulations to School of Architecture Dean Norman Millar and the School of Architecture for the successful Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans  (PPOHA) grant that will bring $2.8 million to the university over the next five years.  This grant will provide state-of-the-arts technological capacities to the school, add three-year and one-year options to the current Masters of Architecture program, and support students with financial aid.

Students to tackle water, energy strategies
Working during the school year with the City of Burbank, and in the summer term with Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, Woodbury's students and faculty will be providing no-cost planning and design assistance to low-income communities working to devise sustainable water and energy strategies in the face of climate change.  The work is part of the Arid Lands Institute (ALI) at Woodbury University and is being supported by a three-year, $600,000 grant from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The community partners have pledged over $100,000 in donated technical assistance from planners, engineers, and water commissioners.

Professors team up with Chinese fashion mag
Dr. Karen Kaigler-Walker, assistant dean, School of Business, and Dr. Zelda Gilbert, professor of psychology, will partner in September with Ray Li Magazine of Beijing to study Chinese women’s fashion preferences.  According to Drs. Kaigler-Walker and Gilbert, projects of this type--where university researchers team up with a major fashion publication--are rare.  No research with this type of cooperation has been conducted in China.

Pegi Matsuda, publisher of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal and a Woodbury graduate, will kick off the Fall 2009 Woodbury University Graduate Program Speaker Series “Leadership for Aspiring Individuals" on Wednesday, September 23. 'Classics and Cocktails' concert set for Sept. 24
The Woodbury University Cultural Arts Council is pleased to present "Classics and Cocktails" on Thursday, September 24 in the Library. A brief interactive presentation on cocktail party etiquette will be followed by live chamber music. The music of Mozart (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and  Quintet for Clarinet and Strings) will be performed by members of the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra in a short concert designed as an introduction to the world of classical music. Architecture students participate in Beijing exhibition
Congratulations to Woodbury architecture students whose work was selected for a landmark exhibition, Divergent Convergence, at the Beijing Urban Planning Center. The exhibition, which features the work of 15 leading western schools of architecture, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, and MIT, examines the future of urban China.

Woodbury to host 'Pop Cultural Literacy 101'
Woodbury University will host a series of screenings sponsored by ASIFA-Hollywood that will pay tribute to famed entertainers such as Spike Jones, Doodles Weaver, Maria Callas, Buck Owens, Cab Calloway, Muddy Waters and Dave Brubeck who had an impact on the golden age of animation. The second of two screenings in the series, titled Pop Cultural Literacy 101, will take place Friday, Aug. 14, with a short subject starting at 7 p.m. and the feature film at 8:30 p.m.

San Diego MOCA's 'Mix' features professors
“Mix: Nine San Diego Architects and Designers,” a new show of at the Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego that runs through September, features the work of eight architects affiliated with Woodbury's School of Architecture. They are Rinehart Herbst (Todd Rinehart and Catherine Herbst), estudio Teddy Cruz, Jonathan Segal FAIA, Sebastian Mariscal, Lloyd Russell, and Public (James Brown and James Gates). "This is virtually a Woodbury Show of excellent work by our faculty," says Norman Millar, dean, School of Architecture, Woodbury University. Over half of the Rinehart Herbst exhibition is devoted to the design process that resulted in the new Woodbury School of Architecture in San Diego and it is a particularly beautiful and elegant installation. according to Millar.

Family Business Series continues on June 25

Architecture students earn national honors
Woodbury University has placed in this year's ACSA Steel Design Student Competition with four awarded submissions, including two first prizes, winning both submission categories and literally sweeping all the awards in one category. Woodbury students in the past received the first prize in one or both categories of this national competition now for four years in a row.

Krekorian to talk with small business owners
Small business owners have a chance to talk with California Assembly Member Paul Krekorian on Friday, June 19 at Woodbury University. Krekorian, whose 43rd Assembly District includes Burbank, Glendale, the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area, and much of the San Fernando Valley, will be on campus for a National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) member meeting. The event takes place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Professor's installation opens in NYC
Woodbury interior architecture professor Joshua Stein’s 'Reef', an interactive installation with LA-based architect Rob Ley, is now open at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York City. The installation, which runs through July 25, investigates the role emerging material technology can play in the sensitive reprogramming of architectural and public space.

June 10 event features Disney animation
Join Don Hahn and a panel of distinguished guests for a discussion of Walt Stanchfield’s Drawn to Life series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10 at Woodbury University’s Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium. Drawn to Life: 20 Years of Disney Master Classes is a two volume collection of the legendary lectures from Sranchfield, a long-time Disney animator, and is edited by Hahn, a Disney filmmaker of more than 30 years who produced the classic "Beauty and the Beast." 

Woodbury co-sponsors accounting roundtable
Woodbury University and BDO Seidman are sponsoring "Fear of Fair Market Values - Mark to Market," a June 10 roundtable discussion for the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Chartered Accountants in the United States. Dr. John Karayan, chair of the accounting department at Woodbury, and adjunct professor and PWC emeritus partner Frank Murphy will be among the roundtable participants at the event at BDO in Century City.

¡Viva Verde! Scholarship gala is a success
More than 650 friends of Woodbury were on hand on May 3 at The Beverly Hilton for the Woodbury University Gala 2009 scholarship benefit that raised more than $250,000 for scholarships. In this economic environment, it was inspiring to witness Woodbury's friends, donors, and partners help us to raise the funds needed to help students complete their education. The theme this year was ¡Viva Verde! What’s Green, What’s New, What’s Green with You? Inspired by the “green” theme, three community awards were presented to outstanding individuals/corporations committed to being socially responsible in their fields. Thom Mayne of Morphosis received the Leadership in Architecture Award and Ray Anderson of Interface was presented with the Leadership in Design Award. Johnson Controls received the Leadership in Business Award. Meteorologist and reporter Josh Rubenstein of CBS 2 and KCAL 9 was the evening’s master of ceremonies.

Caps and gowns galore at Woodbury
More than 4,000 students and family members celebrated on Saturday, May 9 at Woodbury University’s annual commencement ceremony. Jonathan Brown, president of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, was the morning’s keynote speaker. Brown spoke to the Class of 2009 about the importance and value of comparative advantage in life and the seen and the unseen effects of decision making. Also on the stage to deliver inspiring remarks were Daniel Bejines '09, Gayane Tatulyan '09, and Thomas Vessella MA 2009.

ASIFA-Hollywood will celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of Walt Disney Animation’s beloved films, “The Little Mermaid,” with an evening with lively discussion with some of the animators and crew members at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 at the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium at Woodbury University.

Professor earns award for water disinfecting idea
Woodbury assistant professor Eric Olsen displayed prototypes of his Solar Water Disinfecting Tarpaulin as part of an invited exhibition at the Palazzo Isimbardi in Milan in conjunction with the 2009 Salone di Milano. The Solar Water Disinfecting Tarpaulin received a Well-Tech Award, recognizing its "technological innovation and sustainable value as well as its accessibility and contribution to the improvement of the quality of life."

Graphic design students work to create a sustainable LA
Unhealthy inland air, poor tap water imported from afar, and semi-paralyzed roadways are enduring Los Angeles hallmarks. The city has made progress toward becoming more sustainable, but there is much more left to do so Woodbury graphic design students students are working in creative teams to tackle these problems. The special six-month project is part of collaboration with Sapient International, the largest independent interactive agency in the world with offices in New York, Los Angeles, London and Munich.

Woodbury offers free computer graphics workshop
Thinking about pursuing a design degree? Woodbury is offering a free computer graphics summer workshop for high school students. The workshop is two days a week, May 18 – July 31 on the Woodbury campus. Registration is now open and space is limited.

Woodbury to host AIGA student portfolio day
Woodbury University will host a number of graphic design-related events next month, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA/LA Annual Student Portfolio Day.  Graphic design student members from colleges and universities throughout Los Angeles will be on Woodbury's Burbank campus on Saturday, May 2 with 75 professional designers who will review student portfolios throughout the day.  Students will have the opportunity to get one-on-one feedback about their work before shopping their portfolios to design studios after graduation.

'Culture of Fear' author to speak at Woodbury
On Friday, April 24, Woodbury University's School of Media, Culture & Design’s Psychology Department will host Dr. Barry Glassner to discuss his new book, The Gospel of Food. Featured in the movie Bowling for Columbine and author of the bestselling book The Culture of Fear, Glassner’s new book takes on America’s love-hate relationship with food and reveals the reason we are so captivated, and confused by this basic human need.

Campus comes together for Earth Day celebration
LEED AP Interior Designer and green living expert Alegre Ramos will share “The 5Rs of Sustainable Living in a Consumer Economy” during Woodbury’s Sustainability Speaker Series on Wednesday, April 22. The program is from noon to 1 p.m. at Woody's. Other Earth Day activities include Low Carbon Diet Day and a "What’s Your Ecological Footprint?" exhibit. Both all-day events are at Woody’s.

'Logistical Dreams' exhibition opens April 17
Come by Woodbury University’s Wedge Gallery on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. for an exhibition of photography and video by Paul Groh mixed with a “Friday Fix at Six” event with food and drinks. The show, “Logistical Dreams,” is a multi-sensory photographic, video, auditory, and olfactory look at the surreal landscapes and images from today’s warehousing, transportation and distribution systems spawned by globalized trade. The exhibition runs through April 26.

Architecture student wins honors in LA AIA's '2x8'
Congratulations to School of Architecture student Ahdom Sayre, who won third place prize in the 2009 LA AIA 2x8 competition.  The 2x8 is an annual exhibition sponsored by the AIA/LA, showcasing exemplary student work from architecture and design institutions throughout California.  Each of the participating academic programs selects two projects that exemplify its core vision.

Visual effects designer to speak April 8
Peter Webb, a visual effects designer who has worked on hit films such as Batman Forever and Terminal Velocity, will present a lecture and demonstration at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8 in the Powell Galley at the Design Center on the Woodbury University campus.

Majestic exec to discuss careers and community service
Majestic Realty executive and Majestic Realty Foundation founding president Fran Inman will explore “Career, Companies, and Community Service” at noon on Wednesday, April 1 in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium at Woodbury. Her appearance is part of the School of Business Dean’s Lecture Series. The event is free and is open to the public.

Woodbury's Stein part of 'màsTransit' winning project
Los Angeles' transportation woes are legendary, but solutions have been elusive. An interdisciplinary team featuring designers Joshua G. Stein/Radical Craft, Aaron Whelton/AAW Studio, and Jaclyn Thomforde, with city planner Jacob M. Brostoff envision màsTransit -- a regional high-speed rail for Los Angeles with a landscape to match -- as a way to address the city's needs and recently took the first place prize in the international design competition A New Infrastructure: Innovative Transit Solutions for Los Angeles. Stein is a member of the Woodbury faculty.

Psychology students to present research papers
Four senior psychology majors from Woodbury University’s School of Media, Culture & Design have had their research projects accepted at the 21st annual convention of the Association for Psychological Science (APS). The students and two Woodbury professors will travel to San Francisco in May to present their research projects. APS is a national association and the second largest convention in psychology. In addition to APS, these students will present their work at Woodbury’s Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference on April 24 in the Fletcher Jones Auditorium on the Woodbury campus.

Artists explore 'Sustainability' in new exhibition
With the upcoming 40th anniversary of Earth Day and a growing scientific body of evidence about the causes of climate change, many believe the time is ripe both to celebrate and to press on. Woodbury Hollywood Exhibitions will present “Sustainability,” a group exhibition of Los Angeles based artists, March 28 – May 9. The artists address the issue of sustainability in various ways—through the adaptive reuse of materials and the investigation of locales, by designing a low-carbon foot print residence, creating an eco-loop within an artwork, taking direct personal action, or looking to the impact on land, water, air, health, and social connections. An opening reception will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.

Mike Moon, an art director, producer, director, animator, and winner of two Emmys, will speak at Woodbury on Wednesday, March 11. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium. A reception, with refreshments, will take place immediately after in the Malburg Atrium.

Woodbury launches MArch program
Building on the success of the School of Architecture’s undergraduate program, Woodbury is launching a new Master of Architecture degree program that takes advantage of the diverse research opportunities in Southern California to produce critically effective and inventive designers who can address the architectural, environmental and urban challenges of the contemporary world. The program begins Fall 2009 and applications for the first class are being accepted through April 20.

LA Chamber honors Woodbury for leadership
Woodbury University is the recipient of the Corporate Leadership Award from the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. Woodbury, which is now celebrating its 125th anniversary, was one of the founding members of the LA Chamber. More than 1,100 business and civic leaders attended the Chamber's 120th annual inaugural dinner at LA Live, where Automobile Club of Southern California CEO Thomas McKernan received the Chamber's Civic Medal of Honor and Occidental Petroleum Corp. Chairman and CEO Dr. Ray Irani was honored as a Distinguished Business Leader.

Woodbury to host 'Valley Summit II: Designing the SFV'

The San Fernando Valley epitomizes suburban sprawl, but surprisingly little scholarship exits about the Valley’s archi­tecture and urban design. Join us February 12-13 for Woodbury University's Valley Summit II —Design­ing the SFV. The conference from the School of Architecture will bring together a group of scholars and community design experts who will present strategies on how we might begin to understand and, poten­tially, augment the 345 square miles that constitute the San Fernando Valley.

Trustee, former dean earns AIA honor
Louis Naidorf, FAIA, former dean of Woodbury's School of Architecture, has been named the the 2009 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service by the American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) . This award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the improvement of the built environment and the architectural profession, as well as contributions to the lives of citizens served by the profession. From his 44-story Exxon Building in Houston, to his projects in California, control of solar gain has been an important criterion for Naidorf.

Woodbury to host consul general of Mexico in LA
Woodbury University’s International Studies Program will host the consul general of Mexico in Los Angeles on Friday, Feb. 6. A reception for Juan Marcos Gutierrez-Gonzales will begin at 6:15 p.m. in the Ahmanson Main Space followed by a presentation from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the Fletcher Jones Auditorium.

Students to 'Emerge' in city-wide graphic design exhibit
Woodbury graphic design students will exhibit their work come February in a city-wide exhibition. The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is hosting the exhibition, "Emerge," which involves students from various colleges and universities in the Los Angeles area. Each school will have an opportunity to showcase the  work of AIGA student members, and selected students will receive scholarship  awards for design excellence.  The exhibition will be from 6 to 10 p.m. on February 7 on the campus of Loyola  Marymount.

Interior architecture student wins national award
Danae Ledgerwood, a Woodbury interior architecture student now finishing her last semester of studies, has just won the prestigious 2008 Donald G. Brinkmann Scholarship competition. Legerwood’s work was selected from more than 80 submissions from top interior design programs across the country invited to participate in the commercial design competition. She will receive the award on February 1 in New York City at the Contract Magazine awards breakfast.

'Topographies' opens in Hollywood on Feb. 14
Join us February 14 for the opening reception for the solo art exhibition “Topographies" at Woodbury Hollywood Exhibitions. Los Angeles artist Charles Hachadourian creates topographical portraits from particular sites that he has well established connections to, ranging from Armenia, to the nearby Pasadena Arroyo Secco, to his own backyard. The reception from 6 to 9 p.m. for the exhibition of sculptures is free and open to the public.

Navigate the 'Obstacle Course'
Michael Arata's solo art exhibition "Obstacle Course" will open January 27 with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on January 27 at Woodbury University. The free exhibit, which runs through February 28 in the Cabrini Gallery, includes interactive paintings and sculptural floorworks by Los Angeles artist Michael Arata who invites us to playfully navigate this exhibition in a manner that reminds us of our challenges in the everyday physical, as well as digital, world. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.

A Few Zines Show: Dispatches from the Edge
The work of John Southern, an adjunct professor in the School of Architecture at Woodbury, was selected to be included in the A Few Zines show at Studio X in New York City. Southern’s zine, Sumoscraper: A Cultural Content Container, is featured in the show and is a written and graphic critiqueof the current trends within the design profession.

Woodbury to host SMART car launch
On Tuesday, January 13., Woodbury will host a delegation of fashion and automotive journalists from China for the launch of the Mercedes-Benz SMART car in China. The head of Mercedes-Benz and the head of Mercedes-Benz production in China and other dignitaries will also be on hand.   The official launch will kick off with a fashion event at 11 a.m. that will position the SMART car not as an automobile, but as a lifestyle.

Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies seeks fellows
Woodbury University’s Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies is now seeking students and faculty who want to challenge themselves through the Fellows Program, which includes the Senior Fellows for faculty members and the Junior Fellows for students. Both awards are directed at our overarching goal: to pursue learning and research freed from disciplinary boundaries while upholding the university’s commitments to academic quality, innovation, creativity, and social responsibility.

Students to study, spend holidays in Rome
Seventeen Woodbury students from the School of Architecture will spend the holiday season in Rome with professors Jose Parral and Dr. Paulette Singley.  During their 27-day stay in Rome, students will visit the Vatican, ancient Roman Forum, baths of Caracalla, and the Pantheon.  Students will witness the eternal city as it sparkles and twinkles during the holidays and they will spend New Year's Eve in Rome. Plus they'll earn three credits toward their degrees.

School of Architecture declares 'Year of the Valley'
The San Fernando Valley means different things depending who you ask. Suburban paradise or out-of-control sprawl? Prosperous business and housing sectors or gritty industrial lots and hard-scrabble apartment complexes? Now, the Valley is the focus of classes, studios, and seminars in Woodbury's School of Architecture.  During the "Year of the Valley," faculty and students are focusing on issues ranging from community design and outreach to public access television stations and the challenges of water reclamation or heat islands. The scope of research will range from the utopian to the highly pragmatic.

Congratulations! Woodbury earns NASAD nod
The animation, fashion design, graphic design, and interior architecture programs in Woodbury's School of Media, Culture & Design have achieved accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Accreditation, in practical terms, is a stamp of approval, a sign that Woodbury ascribes to, believes in, and has met an external set of basic criteria. Woodbury sought NASAD accreditation to demonstrate its commitment to excellence and to use its nationally recognized standards as a base of academic strength and operational integrity.

Professor's exhibition opens November 15
Woodbury adjunct faculty member and LA artist Keith Walsh will debut his solo exhibition “Borrowing a Corpse to Resurrect a Soul” at the Kristi Engle Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, and the exhibition will run through December 20. The phrase "Borrowing a Corpse to Resurrect a Soul”  comes from a business strategist who has paraphrased a passage from the ancient Chinese military manual The Art of War by Sun Tzu.  The idea is to take a language, an appearance, or a stratagem that has been forgotten, and re-formulate it in order to surprise the enemy. 

Norwegian composer's tour stops at Woodbury
Norwegian composer and guitarist Gisle Krogseth will present a concert of original and contemporary works in November at Woodbury University's Los Angeles Times Library in an event that is free and open to the public. He will be accompanied by Armenian violinist Ophelia Nanagyulyan and local guitar virtuoso Marty Tippens.

Superheroes, zombies and masked wrestlers
While often disregarded as empty entertainment,superheroes, zombies, and luchas are more than the sum of their parts. The uncanny double has maintained a consistent presence in literature, philosophy, psychology and art from the nineteenth century to the present day, but during certain moments of historical crisis and social instability it has had a heightened influence on culture. In the uncertain space that exists between secret identities and the worlds of the living and the dead, that which is hidden often comes to light. This free Friday, November 14 presentation, which includes Woodbury's Dr. Amy Pederson, will examine the way in which these cultural forms allow us to map social anxieties, and produce narratives of power and powerlessness, violence and morality.

Exploring the field of costume
The Costume Designers Guild & Woodbury University's Fashion Design Department invite you to the second annual "Exploring the Field of Costume" panel with distinguished designered and illustrators on Thursday, November 13. The Woodbury University Library Associates proudly presented Roy Disney with the Ray Bradbury Creativity Award on November 1. The event also included a screening of the movie The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit, written by Bradbury and produced by Disney.

Professors, MBA student head to China
Anita Minassian, an MBA student and 2007 Woodbury graduate in fashion marketing, recently left for Beijing to join professors Dr. Karen Kaigler-Walker, marketing, and Dr. Zelda Gilbert, psychology. Dr. Kaigler-Walker and Dr. Gilbert currently are in Beijing researching Chinese women's appearance motivation and body image satisfaction.

See a preview of the pilot for a new reality television show Sole Perspective™, set at Woodbury and featuring Woodbury fashion design and architecture students and designers from Bernardo Footwear, maker of the Bernardo Sandal, inspired by the designs of Bernard Rudofsky. CEO to host 'Cyber Security' on October 22

Woodbury's Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO) will be hosting Anna Winningham's lecture about "Cyber Security" in the Fletcher Jones Auditorium from noon to 1:15 p.m. on October 22. Winningham is a former special agent for the FBI. Today, she is a certified protection professional and vice president of operations at Risk Control Strategies. Hollywood exhibitions opens with 'Pile-Up'
"Analytic & Synthetic Pile-Up," the inaugural exhibition at Woodbury Hollywood Exhibitions will open with a reception from 6-9 p.m. on Saurday, October 18. Analytic & Synthetic Pile-Up is a group exhibition featuring sculpture, painting, and photography by 15 Los Angeles artists. The artworks in the exhibition utilize a "piling-up"--a multi-layering of concepts or materials--where the elements are chunky and disjunctive in some works, and seamless or autonomous in others. This event is free and open to the public.

New students invited to Preview Day on October 18
Woodbury University's Admissions Preview Day will be held Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The Preview Day schedule includes workshops for prospective freshmen, transfer, and graduate students. Students will get information about the admissions process, student life, and financial aid.

Jack O'Neill earns Movers & Shapers Award
Jack O’Neill is the recipient of the 2008 Woodbury University Movers and Shapers Award that recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership and have made significant contributions to the Burbank community. During his more than 30 years of involvement in Burbank civic and business life, O’Neill has been instrumental in bettering the city. Woodbury will honor O'Neill during a Tuesday, October 14 award luncheon.

Dr. Clift to lead School of Media, Culture & Design

Woodbury to host student animation film fest
ASIFA-Hollywood’s Animator Educator’s Forum will host its first Student Animation Film Festival on October 18 at Woodbury University. The festival, which begins at 10 a.m., will feature short film submissions from students as well as a free demo reel and portfolio review for the public.

Henry T. Segerstrom receives Shulman Award
Orange County philanthropist and businessman Henry T. Segerstrom has been recognized at Woodbury University with the 2008 Julius Shulman Communication Award. Past recipients of the Shulman Award, named for the famed architectural photographer and friend of the university, have included actor Dustin Hoffman, actress Lily Tomlin, publisher Benedikt Taschen, Crystal Cathedral pastor Dr. Robert H. Schuller, and “California’s Gold” host Huell Howser.

Sculpture exhibit opens with Sept. 16 reception
Rebecca Ripple's solo sculpture exhibition will open with a Tuesday, September 16 reception. Check out how Ripple's work incorporates the use of text, which often relates to a part of the body, with a surprising use of materials. Dr. Chekuri is SENCER Leadership Fellow
Woodbury's Dr. Nageswar Rao Chekuri has been elected a 2008-2009 SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Leadership Fellow by the National Fellowship Board of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.  As a SENCER Leadership Fellow, he joins 75 other faculty and academic leaders across the country who will assist scholars who are interested in applying science and mathematics to pressing civic issues.

San Diego campus finds a new home
Woodbury’s San Diego campus has a new home. After calling downtown Eighth Avenue home for many years, the School of Architecture is now located in the San Diego neighborhood of Barrio Logan.

Dwell features San Diego professor's '2inns'
Designer and developer Sebastian Mariscal, who teaches at Woodbury's San Diego architecture program, wanted to create a big deck with a canopy. The result is a pair of identical houses called 2inns (pronounced “twins”) that Mariscal designed on a La Jolla hillside overlooking the Pacific. Jr. Fellows to address population change, sustainability
The increasing number of human beings on the planet (from 3 billion in 1960 to more than 9 billion in 2050) creates a host of issues for us to confront. Seven Woodbury students who have been chosen as The Junior Fellows in Transdisciplinarity for 2008 will collaborate with Dr. Douglas Cremer, director of the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies, in a special seminar to address issues related to population change and sustainability, a topic that emerged from their application essays on current topics of pressing interest.

Students take top honors in national design contest
Students from the Woodbury School of Architecture cleaned up once again at the annual ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition, taking multiple first and third place prizes as well as honorable mentions. It's become a Woodbury tradition, with architecture students regularly winning top honors in this highly competitive contest.

Costa Rica serves as classroom on global apparel
Woodbury students recently returned from two and half weeks of study and research related to the apparel industry in Costa Rica. Students earlier studied the garment industry in the United States, with an emphasis on Los Angeles - including some eye-opening field trips, according to Dr. E.B. Architecture grad part of new design reality show
Look for Woodbury alumnus Bryan Oknyansky on television soon as part of Sole Perspective™, America’s first reality television competition to take on the world of shoe design. Oknyansky earned a bachelor of architecture degree in May and took part in weeks of filming for the series, with the pilot concluding June 3. Professor's project part of changing Los Angeles
Space is at a premium in most of Los Angeles, but there are small lots available throughout the city.  The challenge is turning a lot as small as 600 square feet and just 12 feet wide into something that is desirable. Jeanine Centuori, an architecture professor at Woodbury University and a principal in the firm UrbanRock Design, is on the cutting edge of doing just that.

Klinger and Davtyan earned a $1,500 scholarship for their project, “Folded Suture.” This is the second consecutive year that Woodbury students have placed in this annual event.

Mexico City trip to explore art, urban issues

Woodbury, animation student take home Annie Awards
Woodbury University was a big cheese along with a gourmet rat (“Ratatouille”) at the annual Annie Awards honoring the best in animation for 2007. The university and JoJo Baptista, a junior animation major at Woodbury, each received a certificate of merit at the gala event, where representatives of the university mingled with the biggest names in animation.

San Diego architecture faculty honored
Two architects from Woodbury’s San Diego architecture program have received top honors for a home they designed in Palo Alto. Architecture professor Todd Rinehart and Catherine Herbst, who is the director of the San Diego architecture program, are picking up the 2007 Concrete Masonry Design Awards Residential Design Award for their Welton Residence project.  (Read what the judges had to say.)

Sustainability contest deadline is Feb. 22
The good news? Woodbury University wants ideas about how to promote sustainability. The not-as-good news? All entries submitted prior to January 1 in the Sustainable Campus Task Force's slogan and logo contest must be resubmitted. 'Amadeus' Oscar-winning actor to speak Feb. 17
Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham will discuss his distinguished career in film, theater, and television during a February 17 event at Woodbury University that also features author Ray Bradbury. Annie Awards to honor Woodbury, animation student
JoJo Baptista, a junior animation major at Woodbury University, will receive a Certificate of Merit at the 2007 Annie Awards presented by the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA-Hollywood).  In addition, Woodbury University is also receiving a Certificate of Merit.

Summer in Rome 2008
Woodbury students from all majors have an opportunity to spend four weeks in Rome, learning about the culture, architecture, and urbanism of the "Eternal City"--one of the oldest, continually inhabited cities in the world.  The group will spend two weeks after graduation in Burbank preparing for this trip by viewing films, completing assigned readings, and attending lectures before departing for Rome. Then, it will be off to Rome for the month of June.

Professor to address India business execs
Dr. Satinder Dhiman, associate dean of the School of Business and chair of the MBA program at Woodbury, will travel to India next month to share insights on new and emerging trends in management education. Dr. Dhiman will present the keynote address at the IPCSI’s annual international conference on January 12. IPCSI is the International Punjabi Chamber for Service Industry.

Sustainability Task Force sponsors two contests
Two contests will promote sustainability at Woodbury. The first contest is to create a slogan or logo for Woodbury’s sustainability efforts. The winner will pocket $200.

Woodbury plans three events to mark World AIDS Day
In partnership with the LGBT Allies and the Wellness Committee, World AIDS Day will be commemorated with three on-campus events to “Take the Lead.” Programs will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27, Wednesday, Nov. 28, and Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Design charette focuses on wildfire relief
Woodbury University’s School of Architecture and the Los Angeles chapter of Architecture for Humanity recently hosted a design charrette for individuals interested in developing transitional shelter solutions for victims of a natural disaster. The charrette at Woodbury’s Center for Community Research and Design was in response to the wildfires that affected so many Southern Californians last month.

Lily Tomlin earns Julius Shulman Communication Award
Award-winning comedienne Lily Tomlin talked about her work in television, on Broadway and on film during a recent Library Associates event at Woodbury University. Tomlin also received the 2007 Julius Shulman Communication Award, presented annually by the famed architectural photographer and long-time friend of the university.

Architecture profs, students honored in San Salvador
Woodbury’s School of Architecture was a key player at the recently concluded ELEA XXIV conference in San Salvador. Associate professor Gerard Smulevich delivered the keynote address on "Urbanism, Version 3.0" to the more than 1,500 architecture students attending the annual conference and Woodbury took home prizes in three competitions.

Bob Baker honored as Alumnus of the Year
Business and community leader Robert H. Baker of San Diego has been honored by his alma mater with the 2007 Woodbury University Alumnus of the Year Award. The Woodbury Alumnus of the Year Award recognizes an extraordinary individual who has set a high standard in their chosen profession, for citizenship, for volunteerism, and for philanthropy.

Former Iraq 'oil for food' UN rep to speak on Nov. 2
Denis J. Halliday, former UN Assistant Secretary General who was the head of the “oil-for-food” program in Iraq during Saddam Hussein’s reign, will offer his assessment of the effectiveness of the UN during a Friday, November 2 lecture at Woodbury University. Halliday eventually resigned from the UN to protest the sanctions imposed against Iraq by the Security Council and is now a highly sought-after lecturer around the world. The free program is part of Woodbury’s International Speaker Series.

Woodbury students drive automotive project
Woodbury students are now working with one of the automotive industry’s best-known luxury brands. This research initiative focuses on discovering elements of design, concept development, and marketing that could be considered for the next generation of one of the automaker’s vehicles.

'The Emerging Asian City' set for Nov. 10
From Dubai to Shanghai to Mumbai, the re-emergence of Asia into the architectural consciousness reveals a complex palette of issues that both challenge and expand the mainstream understanding of architectural theory and practice. The Emerging Asian City, a day-long symposium hosted by the Woodbury University School of Architecture and the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies, will examine these issues Saturday, November 10.

Join us Sunday, October 14 to honor Sunder Ramani with the 2007 Woodbury University Movers and Shapers Award that recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership and have made significant contributions to the Burbank community. Joshua G. Stein reception to be held Nov. 7
Woodbury Interior Architecture presents Joshua G. Stein’s “In Form Falls Function” from 5:30pm – 7:30pm on November 7 in New Woody’s. Stein uses packaging foam and inserts (often used for shipping electronics) as physical manifestations of the void and waste inherent in consumer culture. The work explores how these negative spaces hold potential as habitable space.

Architecture students creating Bonnaire lab
Students in a Woodbury architecture studio are working with adjunct faculty member Warren Wagner on a project in Bonnaire, Netherlands Antilles to design a new administration and laboratory building for the Council of International Education Exchange’s ( CIEE ) research station. The facility is a research center for marine biology and marine science exchange students from the U.S. and Europe.

'Small World' fashion exhibit runs through Dec. 7
Come see gorgeous Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Middle-Eastern robes suspended from giant bamboo poles, as well as shoes and clothes made from bast fibers, and wedding garments from Yugoslavia,  India, and Palestine in the new exhibit "It's a Small World: Global Clothing from the Woodbury University Fashion Study Collection." The exhibit runs through December 7 in the Tamkin Center in Cabrini Hall on the Woodbury campus.

Artist Ned Kahn to present Oct. 2 lecture
Artist Ned Kahn will be on the Woodbury campus Tuesday, October 2 to discuss his work. Kahn is known for combining science, art, and technology to integrate natural, human, and artificial systems. His works emphasize natural elements, such as water, fire, wind, and sand; how these behave independently; and how they interact. His lecture will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the New Woody’s. Admission is free.

Oct. 1 'Closed Doors' explores professor's journey
Behnoush McKay, assistant professor of graphic design, will debut the exhibit, “Closed Doors,” at Woodbury University’s Wedge Gallery. An opening reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. on October 1. Closed Doors is a time/space installation piece composed of an interview, photography, motion graphics, and calligraphy as a central sculptural statement. This artistic expression by McKay, who was expelled from a university in Iran almost 30 years ago, is an attempt to communicate a personal journey, expressing how the tests of life can become sources of purification and growth. “It is the manifestation of a personal thirst for knowledge and celebration of a long process of satisfying that thirst through the study of design,” McKay explains.

Sept. 26 'Stars' event to feature architecture students
Eight award-winning Woodbury architecture students will present their work and take part in a panel discussion about their vision for the future of architecture at the September 26 “Stars of the Valley” event. The program begins at 7 p.m. at Sportsman Lodge in Studio City, and tickets are $30 for the dinner program or $15 without dinner. The event is sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the San Fernando Valley Economic Alliance.

'I Dream in Blue' looks at life as a fan
Roger Director, who teaches film writing and literature at Woodbury, is the author of the book: I Dream in Blue: Life, Death, and the New York Giants. I Dream in Blue is the story of a die-hard fan’s quest to have one last touchdown pass, one final celebration of boyhood. Director is a one-time editor of Sport magazine and co-producer of the television sitcom “Mad About You.”

Professor's series to debut on Sundance
A documentary co-created by Woodbury architecture professor Stan Bertheaud will be seen next year on the Sundance Channel. “Architecture School”, a six-part series, follows students enrolled in Tulane University’s School of Architecture as they design and build a house for a low-income family in the devastated city of New Orleans.

Professors take part in 'Dallas' DVD
Louise Coffey-Webb, assistant professor of fashion design and curator of Woodbury’s fashion study collection, and associate professor of communication Dr. Eddie Clift are being interviewed for an upcoming DVD release of the hit television series “Dallas.” The two faculty in the School of Media, Culture & Design were sought out by producers who want to talk about the costume designs of the late Bill Travilla, a Woodbury alumnus, for the show.

Graphic Design Scholarships Available

Professor's Watts Towers Documentary Earns National Recognition

Chronicle of Higher Education Focuses on Woodbury Design Studio
An interdisciplinary design studio for Woodbury interior architecture, graphic design, animation and fashion design students is the subject of a story in the February 17 issue of the prestigious Chronicle of Higher Education. The story looks at the participation of Woodbury students in the Disney Imagi-Nations international design competition. Woodbury animators have placed in the final round of this highly competitive project two out of the past three years.
