Students in the Woodbury's Architecture program are the next generation of creative leaders. A Woodbury education means students who professionally prepared, adept at change, skilled in critical thinking, committed to their communities, and thoroughly prepared for the future. Woodbury offers professional degrees in Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Master of Architecture in Real Estate Development.
Students begin their coursework in their major from their first semester at Woodbury, building a solid foundation of skills and design expertise while nurturing individual creativity. There is an emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving and the exploration of ideas and concepts whether the medium is writing, drawing, building, sewing, or the computer. A liberal arts core, taught by the faculty of Arts and Sciences, develops in our students the intellectual skills to adapt to changing cultural and economic forces. Cross-registration and joint course offerings with the School of Business help students understand the global economic context of the design professions.
As described in the University mission statement, we are committed to the training and education of articulate, ethical and innovative design professionals. The curriculum prepares our students to balance the need to work competitively in the marketplace with the equally important issue of ethical conduct and social responsibility.
Issues of sustainability, responsible advocacy, and appropriate and innovative use of materials and manufacturing processes are addressed in the Architecture curricula. The School of Architecture offers a broad range of applied design disciplines, addressing both two- and three-dimensions, static and dynamic forms, and ephemeral and permanent products. Opportunities to work closely with other disciplines expand our students' personal and professional horizons, enabling them to see design possibilities within a larger context and to anticipate developing trends across disciplines.
As the traditional boundaries between design professions are being blurred by changes in technology and practice, interdisciplinary opportunities prepare students for emerging careers in the rapidly evolving design world. Computer technology is integrated throughout the programs.
Overseas study, travel and student exchange programs give further opportunities for students to explore their professions in other cultures and contexts. The school has exchange agreements with institutions in Latin America, Korea, China, and the UK.
The nationally recognized architecture program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB, reviewed March 2002).
Internship and work experience programs in all of the majors provide invaluable experience with the realities of the professions and prepare our graduates to move smoothly and confidently into their fields.
The Design Center, the Judith Tamkin Fashion Center, and the Architecture Complex offer specialized support facilities including a wood/metal shop, a materials resource library, a photography lab, and specialized computing facilities, as well as providing 24 hr. access to studios.
