One Book, One Campus

The 2013-14 One Book, One Campus selection is Outcasts United: An American Town, A Refugee Team and One Woman's Quest to Make a Difference by Warren St. John. The book tells the story of Clarkston, Georgia, a southern town that became a center for refugee resettlement, through the lens of a soccer team of refugee boys called "the Fugees." The book explores the difficulties the team and town face as people from a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds are forced to live and work together.
University Appreciation & Recognition Luncheon

Explore Woodbury’s past on a fun guided tour led by University founder F.C. Woodbury. During the tour, you’ll visit Olvera Street, the oldest part of Downtown LA and the site of the first Woodbury, the Bradbury Building, an architectural landmark built in 1893, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, the early home of the Academy Awards Ceremony and backdrop for countless Hollywood films, and take a ride on Angels Flight, the beautifully crafted incline railway. Enjoy lunch at one of Los Angeles’ exclusive restaurants Café Pinot. Plus enjoy a short stroll down Carroll Avenue where the houses from the TV show Charmed and Michael Jackson’s iconic music video “Thriller” set.

11:00AM - Angela Diamos, Associate Professor of Animation in the School of Media, Culture and Design: “Experimental animation.” Exploring the organic, the mechanical, the ephemeral and the unknown through images moving in time. Applications and processes of the abstract image will be examined, along with their uses in contemporary film.
11:30AM – Cate Roman, Associate Professor of Graphic Design in the School of Media, Culture and Design: “From Grand Central Market to Supermarket: Los Angeles Jewish Grocers.” As Los Angeles grew into the modern metropolis, Jewish grocers were on the forefront of grocery store innovation and quick to adapt to changing business styles. Associate Professor Cate Roman, the granddaughter of Russian Jewish Immigrant grocers, follows the history of 2 grocery families in Los Angeles from 1917 through the 1940's.
Parents Luncheon with the President

The President and university deans invite parents, along with their son or daughter, to join them for lunch. Parents will have the unique opportunity to listen to the President’s vision for Woodbury, speak with their child’s dean, meet other parents, and learn how they can become an active part of the Woodbury family.
2:00PM - Jeanine Centuori, Undergraduate Chair, School of Architecture (Burbank) and Director of the Architecture and Engagement Center (ACE Center): "Cabins: an Architecture of Improvisational Transformations." This four semester outreach design/build project brought architecture students outside of the academy in the service of a social cause. Students designed and built 10 structures to be used by a therapeutic horseback riding facility in nearby Shadow Hills.
2:30PM – Will McConnell, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Assistant Dean of the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies: “Moving from Land to Sea: the Colorado River Basin, Sea of Cortez, and International Issues in Ecosystem Protections.” Our understanding of best decisions in protecting rapidly eroding ecosystems is deeply impacted by existing political, legal, cultural and economic structures of decisionmaking. The presentation is a case study of Angelenos' relation to the Sea of Cortez, illuminating the need to re-frame assumptions in the struggle to shift current decisionmaking practices (and processes) for creating longer-term environmental sustainability in the entire west and Baja.
